Sustainable training for future T&Is for the new Silk Road

Following the now established tradition of meeting the next generation of professional translators, interpreters and terminologists, President Dr Henry Liu visited the campuses of Xi’an International Studies University (XISU) - FIT Associate Member and co-host of AsiaPacific Translation and Interpreting Forum (APTIF8) and Xi’an Fanyi University.

President Liu lectured to packed halls on the central roles professional associations play in individual professional credibility and the critical roles translators and interpreters play in the image China portrays, as well as strategies to ensure practitioners lead the destiny of our profession. Following his lectures he fielded many questions from both faculties and students alike, and met with many students of both universities to understand their perspectives, needs and aspirations.

Professor Wang Junzhe, President of XISU, officially and warmly welcomed members of FIT Executive Committee (EC) including Alison Rodriguez, Council Member attending in lieu of Terence Oliver who was unable to travel. President Liu emphasised FIT’s commitment to provide dedicated support for FIT Associate Members like XISU. In particular, FIT will work with XISU to facilitate concrete collaborations and projects including staff exchange with other FIT Members and Associate Members along the old Silk Road in line with the “One-Belt-One-Road” initiative - one of the many areas of special strength and interest for XISU.

Faculties of XISU proudly showcased their state-of-the-art facilities for conference interpreting, patent translation and multimedia translation and interpreting. FIT EC also witnessed successful collaboration between journalists and translators and their public-private partnership on training translators and interpreters for Chinese enterprises and industries.

Professor Ding Jing, President of Xi’an Fanyi University welcomed President Liu and Council Member Alison Rodriguez at their green and ecocampus which provides an immersive environment for language learning and a multidisciplinary approach to translator and interpreter training. President Liu thanks President Ding and her faculties and students for their warm, generous hospitality.

Following completion of the Executive Committee Meeting, the President along with EC members and Alison Rodriguez, Council Member in charge of XXI FIT Congress in Brisbane, also met with Vice-Minister Jing Junhai of the Department of Publicity of CCPCC and Vice-Governor Zhuang Changxing of Shaanxi Province. President Liu and FIT EC thank TAC for making these visits such a success and thank XISU and all the organisers and volunteers for hosting a most successful APTIF8. These visits showcase the achievements of Shaanxi and of China.
